An overdressed wooly bugger? Possibly. I like it, though. A good bass fly in both lakes and streams, smallmouth and largemouth. The pearl flashabou and peacock herl add so much to the fly. Note: Dave Whitlock's original fly had a marabou tail. I just can't seem to find good dyed black marabou, so I used arctic fox fur instead. Seems to fish just fine. flies.
Tying instructions:
- Attach the tying thread behind the eye and wrap "down and back" forming a smooth foundation layer of thread.
- Clip a clump of black arctic fox fur from a tail and remove most of the fluff. Tie this along the top of the hook shank such that the tips extend about a full shank length beyond the bend and wrap back to the hook eye.
- Dub a chunk body of SLF or some other synthetic dubbing (Or you can use some sort of synthetic yarn or mohair to make things easier), leaving the thread at the tail.
- Fold the peacock over the top of the body and make a wrap or two to hold it in place.
- Fold a few strands of pearl flashabou along the sides of the fly and make a wrap or two to hold them in place.
- Add some more dubbing to your thread and cover the thread wraps and wind forward, leaving the head at the eye.
- Wrap the hackle forward, folding it as you go. Make an extra turn or two at the head.
- Tie in a length of pearl flashabou and make a couple wraps at the read of the head forming a narrow band of pearl.
- Finish the head with wraps of black thread. Whip finish and trim.
